Interesting documentary. I never realised that New Guinea is the second largest island in the world after Greenland (on the basis that Australia is a continental landmass and not an island). Also those inhabitants of West Papua look incredibly black like.
If I understood the recent history about the ownership of that half of the island properly it was a Dutch possession and then transferred to Indonesia (after being administered by the UN for about a year) instead been given to the people of West Papua to rule for themselves. Whereas the other half of the island (New Guinea) was ruled by Australia and then granted independence.
One thing about Indonesia is its ethnic and linguistic diversity. I think Indonesia is meant to have over 300 ethnic groups and/or languages. There's bound to be several dissatisfied and marginalised peoples in that sort of situation. West Papua could go the way of East Timor but it sounds like there is a lot of resources in West Papua which would mean that Indonesia would strongly resist any attempt of West Papuan independence.

Yes, the biggest problem is the immigration of Indonesians, which are making West Papua's a minority in their own lands and hence and future referendum for independence would be biased in this matter..

The native pupans are being oppressed by Indonesians, they should get a right to self-determination. It's also almost quite a hidden genocide.

Pretty much, the oppression should be more exposed, and the people should be more aware what is going in Irian Jaya this is plain wrog. Indonesia should never have gained that land. What is going on and the world turning a blind eye to oppression frankly disgusts me.Originally Posted by evon

My guess it will become an issue soon, but maybe too late...the main problem is that they held a "fake" referendum which basically gave the land to Indonesia by the hand of the UN...so its hard for them to rectify such a mistake without saying they the UN were wrong..

UN's method of solving problems is by burying potential warmongers in legal paperwork with UN resolutions, it wount help these guys..

I have no clue about Indonesian immigration into West Papua, but Han Chinese immigration is apparently far more significant in the Xinjiang region than it is in the Tibet region.
