Srebrenica: Greek volunteers took part in the massacre of 1995

11 July 1995 is a black day not only for Srebrenica and Bosnian Muslims, but for Europe as a whole and for humanity. That day the Bosnian Serb army under Ratko Mladic occupied Srebrenica and started the “purges”. In the next few days he proceeded in mass executions of Muslim men and adolescents, estimated up to 7.000-8.000. The massacre is considered the biggest war crime in Europe since the Second World War, while the International Court of Justice described it as “genocide” in 2007.
All the above is known in great detail, at least to European public. In Greece, the topic became very “popular” within the margin of Greek-Serbian friendship, Neo-Macedonian Struggle, nationalism, and irredentist fantasies of the 1990s. What remains unknown (apart from a few attempts, like those of journalist collective Ios) is the role of Greek Volunteer Guard (Elliniki Ethelontiki Froura-EEF), a group integrated in the regular Serb-Bosnian Army that took part in Srebrenica’s capture and even placed the Greek, Byzantine, and Vergina flag, next to the Serbian one.
The things that remain unknown about this case outweigh what we already know. How many and what were the members of the EEF? What were their beliefs? How did they act and what was their involvement in the crime? What did they do after their return to Greece?
The blog XYZ Contagion is publishing these days an important and extensive research, named “Srebrenica’s manslaughter, the Greek Volunteer Guard, and the involvement of Golden Dawn” (available at https://xyzcontagion.wordpress.com/srebrenica/). XYZ Contagion team has picked up data for their publication from all possible sources: evidence and statements of the International Court of Justice, online publications, pictures, and videos, testimonials of EEF members. The monumental task of searching thousand of pages in order to find a small (but maybe crucial) detail was completed by the task of intersecting, identifying, correlating, and concluding the main figures (pictures and names, the presence of Greeks in specific places, etc.). This research offers a series of important data, like:
1. The complete list of names of Greeks who participated in EEF with as much information as they could gather for their lives and actions (35-40 people and three missing people). It also offers data on their activities after they returned to Greece (smuggling of arms and steroids, etc.)
2. Photo and video material that help to the identification of the actors and to the udnerstanding of EEF’s role. The research, based on-until now unknown-over 100 photos and on more than 10 films and videos from Bosnia traces the path of Greeks: “combats, battle positions, ceremonies within the army camps with other militias, church attendance, celebration meals after Srebrenica’s fall, and parties with war criminal General Mladic”.
3. Information on the ideology of EEF’s members. As they say, “the ideals of the majority were influenced by National Socialist, Golden Dawn, and nationalism. Therefore, and for more general ideological reasons, “the newspaper Golden Dawn had dedicated several articles to its members and ranks that went to the “front” next to Serb Chetniks. After its entrance in parliament and the adoption of a “nationalist mask, Golden Dawn deleted all its enthusiastic articles on its volunteers from the internet”.
All the above, combined with data on Srebrenica’s massacre, the role of the Serb-Bosnian army and key-persons, like “phillhelene” and one of EEF’s commander generals officer Zvonko Bajagic (defined as war criminal since 1992).
All in all, this research presents for the first time data, documents, testimonies, and visual evidence that shows that “Greek Golden Dawners, fascists, and others were there during the whole week of Srebrenica’s atrocities. They were present exactly at the spot, at the fields, storage houses, and football courts, at the time that mass executions of detained Bosnian Muslims were taking place, at the spots they were digging mass graves after having taken there Muslim men and boys […]. They had a very close relationship to elite paramilitary mercenaries of the Serb-Bosnian Army. According to evidence by the International Court of Justice, they were also taking pictures from the condemned prisoners and from the executions”.
Despite XYZ Contagion’s detailed study, there is still a lot that needs to be done, especially regarding the attribution of responsibility. It is obvious that EEF men that were at the spot of the executions and were taking pictures were not acting as tourists. Their exact involvement needs to be investigated. At this point, the contribution of more researchers and of justice is needed. Let us not forget that war crimes are not barred. As a first step, let us all study systematically the material that XYZ Contagion is generously offering us.
