I generally think it makes sense to divide Italy in three -- north, central, south. All are 'Italian' but what does a Venetian have in common with a Calabrese really?

It depends. If you ask someone from Barcelona he/she will say european and mediterranean, but if you ask someone of Santander he/she will say european and atlantic.
I think "european" is better as it englobes all of us and, anyway, this is a "european cultural community" isn't it?
