In common language we [my family and most people I know] use cops more than police, although they're quite interchangeable. "Cop" used to be a slang word though, and today it's still quite informal although it doesn't sound that way to my ears because of how common it is.

Is the word 'police' (greek origin) the most used word in the world

The word origin is Greek (politeia) but the current meaning doesn't come from Greek, not even from Latin politia, which only meant 'civil administration'. It comes from 18th-century France. In fact, Greeks don't say politeia, but astynomía.

It's an international word indeed, but not as much as some others. It doesn't pass the test of Arabic or of the East Asian languages, for instance. Although I'd say it's well-known by those who don't use it too.

The mid 2000's marked the rise of the motorcycle gangs and their newly arrived Eastern-European adversaries. These two are behind the regeneration of the once weak drug trade, progressing to the point were they're building manufacturing plants.

These recent trends have compelled law enforcement to toughen up. In addition they probably got tired of only pursuing drunk drivers.
