Police agree to new procedures to combat racism

Victoria Police has agreed to an out-of-court settlement which paves the way for new procedures designed to combat racism.

It is being called an historic accord between police and a group of young African Australian men.

They had gone to the Federal Court to complain about constant police harassment, saying they were being racially profiled.

Instead of undertaking a long trial, Victoria Police opted to agree to a suite of initiatives to improve the situation and the young men agreed.

Police will now call on community input to change its public contact policies and will announce the results.

It will increase education and allow all of the young men's complaints to be made public.
