In September 2005 the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published a series of cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammed which sparked Muslims to hold protests across the world in late January and early February 2006, some of which escalated into violence resulting in a total of more than 200 reported deaths, attacks on a number of Danish and other European diplomatic missions, attacks on churches and Christians, and a major international boycott. Fatwas were issued against the cartoonists and many continue to live in hiding with attempts made on their lives continuing including most recently on Kurt Westergaard.

Since this was just over cartoons imagine a scenario in which the leader of the Muslims was shot by a Christian. The highest Sunni Muslim leader is the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar. If he was shot by a Christian gunman acting on ideological grounds this would no doubt lead to a world war with thousands if not millions being killed.

Let us contrast this with a Muslim attempt to kill a Christian religious leader. The Catholic Pope holds the equivalent place to Catholics as the Grand Sheikh does to Sunni Muslims being the leader of the largest Christian denomination in the world just as the Sunnis are the largest Muslim sect. Imagine he was shot by a Jihadist Muslim? Muslims will argue there would be a similar response but they are wrong. How do I know?

On Wednesday, 13 May 1981, in St. Peter's Square at Vatican City. The Pope was shot and critically wounded by Muslim Turk Mehmet Ali Ağca. If a greater contrast between vengeant Islam, with is doctrine of violence, and peaceful Christianity, with its "turn the other cheek" philosophy could be made there were no Christian rioters, there were no Christian murderers, there were no wars against Muslims. Instead the Pope, who recovered from his wounds, forgave the Muslim and ultimately had him pardoned for his crime.
