Default Afghanistan: a Middle Eastern or Central Asian Country?

As a student of Geography, I often wondered when looking at maps of the ME if Afghanistan should be appropriately lumped into the region.

Some maps strictly define the eastern most limits of Iran as the eastern end of the ME and leave Afghanistan out. Likewise, Afghanistan is marginalized on maps of C. Asia and often not included.

Its history is indeed one of a marginalized state, no question, a kind of no-mans-land. Overtime, the land was often a place of refuge for those escaping imperialism or more simply of rather clanish tribal people who refused to be ruled by others outside of the tribe.

As a result, strong cultural currents from both the ME and CA have been transfered upong the land.

So what do you think Afghanistan more neatly falls into categorically speaking on the map?

    Central Asian?

    or

    Middle Eastern?

    or

    South Asian?

    Poll added. Please vote.

Middle east, they are next to Iran.

Besides people from Central Asia are a mix of Caucasoid and Mongoloid so I don't see them fitting there anyway.

Yeah, but on the other hand Afghanistan and Pakistan have a lot in common. But Pakistan is South Asian ...

I'd say Afghanistan is at the crossroads between these three regions.

Some Turkic groups are in Afghanistan though.

Also, Zoroastianism, the official state religion of the Persians is said to have developed in Afghanistan/Tajikistan. Some prehistorians even look towards the development of Indo-Iranian language family as occurring in C. Asia.

Afghanistan is also included as South Asia too, I think the question would better if they are Middle eastern or South Asia. Afghans are Indo-Europeans like Pakistan and Iran, Central Asia are Turkic, different race and speak a totally non-related language.

I was thinking that too but wasn't so sure if it should be included. However, S. Asia, a unique geographic concept and cultural are of its own, certainly did influence Central Asia as well.

    S. Asia added as a poll option.

Unesco's geographic definition of C. Asia as well as Soviet and "Modern":
