As a student of Geography, I often wondered when looking at maps of the ME if Afghanistan should be appropriately lumped into the region.
Some maps strictly define the eastern most limits of Iran as the eastern end of the ME and leave Afghanistan out. Likewise, Afghanistan is marginalized on maps of C. Asia and often not included.
Its history is indeed one of a marginalized state, no question, a kind of no-mans-land. Overtime, the land was often a place of refuge for those escaping imperialism or more simply of rather clanish tribal people who refused to be ruled by others outside of the tribe.
As a result, strong cultural currents from both the ME and CA have been transfered upong the land.
So what do you think Afghanistan more neatly falls into categorically speaking on the map?
Central Asian?
or
Middle Eastern?
or
South Asian?
