GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Pfizer and other will strop their meds distribution to Greece after Greek companies had failed to pay their bills for months. This in turn caused great deal of medication shortages across Greece in particularly meds for hepatitis C, arthritis, antibiotics, immunomodulators etc.
Empty and closed pharmacy stores has infuriated Greeks who are frequently crossing the border into Macedonia, some to Bulgaria in search of medications.
According to the Macedonia's director for the Bureau of Medical Supplies, Ilcho Zahariev, Greeks are often seen in Valandovo, Gevgelija and Bitola purchasing medications from our pharmacy stores.
"Our pharmacies are fully equipped and are somewhat cheaper than in Greece, taking into account the shortages in Greece, it is understandable they will be coming to Macedonia for their medicine", says Zahariev.
Zahariev said customs officials as well as pharmacy representatives have noticed an increase of Serbian citizens crossing to border and going to Kumanovo to buy medications, primarily cytostatic drugs.
Macedonian pharmacies are well connected with EU's pharmaceutical sector. For instance local pharmacies need only hours to register and import new medication from the EU, usually the entire documentation and approval is done electronically, whereas the medication arrives in the country within 10-15 days.
It takes 210 days to do the same for the countries around Macedonia.
Zahariev boasted Macedonian pharmacies are very professional and strict in their work, not once a counterfit/fake medication has found its way into a pharmacy. Zahariev pointed out that last year Government inspectors had conducted 3,000 unannounced inspections of pharmacies across the country, not a single fine had been issued.
