IMO, they're Southern with an Eastern twist. Unlike with Romanians, I feel closer to Bulgarians, Archduke knows what I'm talking about.

A mixture: both southern and eastern BUT probably a little bit more southern than eastern! I feel conected to the Greeks, Serbs and Romanians, who are mainly southern. After that I feel connected to Ukrainians and Russians who are eastern europeans.

By the way Duskfall may have a point: Bulgarian has really "balkan" grammer: totally unslavic and shared with Romanian and Albanian!
