is unknow yes , but the theories present for the moment claim that they were from the pamir and lately moved to what today is tatarstan north caucaso and crimea , and using the logic i think they were similar to today volga tatars (volga tatars are full of pontid type)
i see soe studies where they are described as very tall poeple mostly europoid but with some mongolid influence
but of course these are just theories , i am not like the turkish pan-turanist wich post here and claim to know the old bulgars so good like they travel with a time machine and see them lol

Haha, you probably have watched too many videos about modern Danube and Volga Bulgarians similarities Volga Tatars have some Pontids, but nowhere near Bulgarians' level. A lot of them aren't much different from Russians, many are strongly Uralid or Turanid influenced and look almost Mongoloid. It's because Volga Tatars aren't only Bulgars' descendants but also Kumano-Kipchaks, local Uralic tribes and to a lesser extent, some Slavs in recent times.
Here is a Volga Tatar metal group. Do they look like Bulgarians? Not really.

Yes they are. As much as Anatolicus Turks.
Most Turkish Bulgarians show Turanid vibes (even if very low in most cases).
In fact we can discuss whether ethnic Bulgarians are closer to West Turk groups or to... Russians or Poles (true Slavics).
Bulgarians have the wrong habit to claim anything Turk.
In fact Christian Turks.
In fact Bulgarians consider as their God-given right to assimilate any (Orthodox) Christian Turk group; especially if the group have the least Slav admixture.
Gagauzes are first.
Chuvashes are the second target.
