Belgium is not an artificial nation, there were Belgians already in the middle ages; it's really just the southern Netherlands that became independent as a peculiarity. The Walloons and Flemish are not different ethnicities and they both have the same history. I would rather a Kingdom of the Belgians than a Flemish Republic.

Currently, the majority of Flemings do not support a reunification with the Netherlands. The old generation (my grandparents etc) usually don't support it because they're still devout catholics and would hate to be one with a protestant nation.

The newer generation, well. Let's just say the Belgian propaganda has been doing its work for 180 years now. If I look at most of my friends, they dislike our Dutch brothers to the same extent as they dislike the French-speaking Belgians. They constantly focus on our differences, and refuse to see our commonalities.

Personally, I would love to be reunited with the Northern Netherlands, on the condition that we are treated as equals, and not as subservients or as run-away sons or similar terms I've seen used on Dutch forums, usually meant derogatory and/or paternalistic.

If a reunification turns out impossible, I'd still prefer that we work very closely together.

edit to add: There is also only ONE far-right organisation I can think of on top of my head which openly pleads for reunification at all costs, and that's Voorpost.

This was very interesting and something I have asked myself about. I can understand the reasons of nations like Scotland or Catalonia, but in the case of Flanders, I did not quite get why reunification is not an attractive option to most Flemish. This seems to clarify some points.

While I don't care about "Flemish nationalism", I find some Flemish nationalists to be incredibly arrogant in the most retarded way. Basically OP's text is full of shit.

This is because the Flemish are by nature an industrious, freedom-loving nation, in opposition to the inproductive, socialist-minded Walloons.
