We may be sharing with some of the same people. Some interesting ones there.. M1 is a South and Southwest Asian haplogroup, and L0 is SSA.

    2 more Palermitan relatives:

Odd that West Sicilian DNA is often very nonspecific. The first one might be mixed from looking at their numbers, but they didn't tell me anything about it.

Compare to an Eastern Sicilian I share with:

I'm impressed by how much Northern European the Palermitans have. I think it must be due to Norman ancestry which is probably concentrated in specific areas. The other Palermitan you share with has both the Northern Euro and the Middle Eastern, but is close to the "typical" Sicilian result otherwise.

Interestingly most of these results show Middle Eastern, but not North African ancestry. Could it possibly be due to some of the Muslim rulers coming from Egypt?

Our Arab rulers (Kalbid dynasty) didn't come from Egypt, but rather Arabia proper.

Ohhh, ok. So do you think the "Middle Eastern" comes from them, or is it more likely Phoenician or some Neolithic Anatolian?

    Ancient moreso than Arab.

It's said that King Frederick gathered all of the Muslims of Sicily in 1224 and moved them to the town of Lucera in Puglia. The fact that he was able to do that implies, at least to me, that there weren't many Muslims in the country.

And they had freedom to practice their religion under the Normans.

The question would be if some of the Muslims converted to Christianity and were assimilated. If not, then the genetic legacy of Muslim invaders would be slim to none.

I don't know. Why would Arabic-speaking Shi'ite Muslims decide to start speaking Latin, become Catholics, and serve Latins rather than go elsewhere where they can remain elites? They must have gone fully native for that to happen. While possible, and while I'm sure it happened for some people, I doubt that it was a significant number.

Ok. Given that, where does the North African component that nearly all Sicilians have (anywhere from 2 to 7%) come from?
