The number of new faces seen every Shabbat in the synagogues of England, rose sharply in 2012, as French Jews are escaping a surge of anti Jewish attacks, according to press reports in the United Kingdom.
The number of French Jews crossing the Channel to find a safe haven in the U.K. has increased as figures released this week showed a 58 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents in France for 2012.
Last week, the Chief Rabbi of the U.K., Lord Sacks, warned: "the position of the Jews in Europe today is very difficult. There are threats now to ritual circumcision and ritual slaughter. Jews in Europe have begun to ask, is there a place for us in Europe?"
The warning follows a sharp increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in France following the murder of four Jews in Toulouse, last winter. In the following 10 days, 90 anti Jewish incidents were reported, more than five times the average rate.
St. John's Wood Synagogue in London has launched an independent French prayer service, regularly attended by 120 people on Shabbat. The rabbi of the congregation, Mordechai Fhima, originally from Paris, said: "Every Shabbat there are new faces here who tell me that they can practice Judaism more openly in the United Kingdom."
