Default How much Arab influence is there in Sicilians?

I work with a couple of Sicilians and you cannot tell them apart from Arabs. In Australia, there are alot of Sicilians, and most look this way. Doing some research, I found it interesting that Arabs conquered Sicily in the past, so I guess this explains some of the reasons.

Good question. I always bring up that the Arabs that conquered Sicily were Tunisians and Iberians... so not 'real' Arabs. If J1 is an Arab haplogroup I think it's a very small male lineage in Sicily (and of course the Arabs who settled there would have all been males)

Someone from the Arabian Peninsula. A Saudi, a Yemeni, a Bedouin.

To answer the question, Sicily has Levantine and Maghreb influences, but very little if any Arabian influence.

We used the three Vallums (Noto, Demone, Mazzara) until the Napoleonic era. In Trapani, they eat couscous, and other Middle Eastern ingredients are relatively commonplace in Sicily where they may not be elsewhere. The traditional dog breed of the region, the Cirneco dell'Etna, is originally from North Africa.

But I'd say that we definitely have a lot more influence from various parts of Europe than the Middle East. At least, today. It may not have been that way 1000 years ago when Shi'ite Muslim Arabs ruled a majority-Greek Orthodox Sicily.

Genetics have implied that sicilians have only 8% middle. eastern or north african genes.

Point from Saracens attacked is not far from Sicilly, also, that place was Carthage before, which also held Sicily.

Which means there was probably not much difference in genes.

The reference point for ME in genetics is much eastern, I am not sure, but i think Levant area, or fertile cresent
