One of The Doors most popular and best-selling songs ~ Hello, I Love You (1968)

The Doors were nearly taken to court and sued for copyright by The Kinks from England over this song, with accusations of The Doors copying The Kinks popular song 'All Day And All Of The Night' (released in 1964).

The UK courts ordered The Doors to pay royalties to The Kinks songwriters for borrowing their riff.

In a September 2012 interview with Mojo magazine The Kinks’ Ray Davies recounted the tale: “The funniest thing was when my publisher came to me on tour and said The Doors had used the riff for ‘All Day And All Of The Night’ for ‘Hello, I Love You,’ I said rather than sue them, can we just get them to own up?

My publisher said, ‘They have, that’s why we should sue them!’ (laughs) Jim Morrison admitted it, which to me was the most important thing. The most important thing, actually, is to take (the idea) somewhere else.”

An out-of-court financial settlement was arranged between The Doors and The Kinks, after The Doors agreed that the two songs sounded similar.

The Kinks receives royalties and money anytime 'Hello, I Love You' is played on the radio or TV in the UK. Some people still humorously post 'All Day & All Of The Night' underneath this song! (Too funny man! )

The two songs do sound alike! (Maybe The Doors thought, 'Hey, I like that;- let's make it better! )

Especially when the two songs are played next to each other! ↓ Jim Morrison said he was a fan of The Kinks in an interview. Jim also said he wanted to be as big as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. (The Kinks should feel honoured that a much greater and a far more inspirational and creative band than themselves would even admire The Kinks songs. ) The Doors >>>>> The Kinks/The Who/The Rolling Stones/The Beatles, etc. I like songs by English rock bands too, but The Doors are legendary and are my favourite band.

15:02 Jim Morrison: 'The Doors came along at the tail-end of the rock revival era from England and many bands from England had already done it. I think it was the success of those English groups that gave hope to a lot of the musicians over here in America, cos look - we can do the same thing man!' (The Doors did it so much better than the English rock bands of the sixties!)

'A lot of American musicians of the sixties had to become popular in the UK before they became popular in the US, such as Jimi Hendrix for example: he wasn't popular in the US until after he'd travelled to England - and after he became popular in the UK, he then became popular in the US. The Doors are different as we felt able to make it big in the US first before going to other countries.' Robby Krieger, The Doors guitarist.

I like this song by The Doors called 'Easy Ride,' (it's got a distinctive American sound to the song.)
