For me, "decent sound" for orchestral music came in around the time of long playing records. 1950 is my go-to date. Not only were recording techniques better, the music wasn't conducted to fit on the 5-minute sides of a 78. There are examples of earlier recordings sounding fine, but not every recording had the budget of Disney's Fantasia, which was recorded on film stock.
