Siouxsie and The Banshees (from England) are often called the 'first ever Gothic band' as they were the first pioneers of early gothic music and early gothic aesthetic styles - with lots of black hair dye, deathly pale face make-up, heavy black eyeliner, black and red lipsticks, black nail polish, silver jewellery like the moon, and lots of black, deep red, and violet clothing in luxurious textures of velvet and silk and leather in the early 80's through to the 90's era, which is also known as 'post-punk'.

(Punk is more fast paced, angry, energetic, and politically and socially rebellious, whereas gothic is darker and more emotionally reflective and melancholic... and often focuses on themes such as religious views, society, life and death, etc.)

Mary Quant invented the mini skirt in the rockin' 60's era of England... and Siouxsie pioneered Gothic music in the early 80's.

Dark electro bands such as Depeche Mode, Visage, Soft Cell, Numan also emerged in the early 80's as a dark reaction against the more pretentious music of the New Romantic bands in England during the early 80's (such as Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran.)
