American rap from 20 years ago sounds much more intelligible and lyrical, not to mention far more close to its funk roots, than the gorilla groans of today. Just as crude but the black rappers in the late 80s and early 90s were still what I'd call self-artists rather than these commercialized creations of today (a general trend in music, sadly).
