The tune from the ancient chant of the "Dies Irae" has become a "go to" theme for "spooky music". A whole slew of composers have used it.

The most innovative is The Rach in "Isle of the Dead".
Parts of it permeates the piece. Near the end when it seems the whole theme itself is stated. Rach lets it continue to decline, This throws the listener for a loop.

Of course, I go for that mad russian svetlanov.
