Pike was an extremely learned man, well-read in the Law and a great many other subjects. He was a southern gentleman and true old-school man of letters. Prior to 1972 his text Morals and Dogma was given to freemasons upon their admission to the Scottish Rite in the Southern Jurisdiction. After 1972 his text was replaced as the text granted to initiates, due to its knowledge being "too advanced for the common member." It details the ancient Mysteries, the symbols of Freemasonry according to degree, and their precedents in both Pagan, and Judeo-Christian antiquity.

Albert Pike knew how to speak a great number of languages, and was a general with the Confederate army (despite being born originally in Boston MA) later negotiating contracts with Native Americans. There is a statue of him in Washington D.C. near the National Grand Masonic Lodge.
