Vytautas Valius was born on August 24, 1930 in a small Lithuanian town Telsiai. He studied at Telsiai Zemaite School, graduated Kaunas Boys School in 1950 and entered the Lithuanian State Institute of Art where he studied drawing for six years. Among V. Valius’ teachers were professors of drawing P. Aleksandravicius and K. Morkunas, assistant professor of painting A. Savickas. Professor J. Kusminskis guided V.Valius’ diploma paper.
In 1965-1971 Valius lectured on drawing and composition at the same Institute. Since 1971 he has been devoted to creative work only. At the present, the artist lives in Vilnius and is an active member both in social and organizing life of Lithuanian Artists’ Community.
The main fields in the artist’s creative works are print, book illustration and painting. Unique contents and problems are typical of his works.
V. Valius is a well-known graphic artist. Thousands of books illustrated by Valius have spread all over the republic. Having graduated the Institute he worked a lot studying the theory of book aesthetics. He is closely connected with the leading republic publishing houses. The artist’s merits in book illustration are prominent; the extremely emotional language of his prints appeals to the spectator’s intellect. The main artistic criteria in V. Valius’ works is determined by his reflections on objective scientific laws. He is inspired by Lithuanian folk art.
