I just stick to psytrance now, partially because it's one of the old major subgenres of EDM that has remained the most underground.
This track by X-Dream from 1997 is kind of proto-darkpsy that has minimal tonal sounds, and it even has a darkpsy-style bassline with a bass note on every 16th measure and zero changes in the note of the bass. In the last years of the 90s, X-Dream was one of the pioneers of the transition from goa trance to psy trance, which like Ishkur says "is what Goa Trance sounds like when you remove the Goa" (https://music.ishkur.com).
X-Dream is seen as a precursor of darkpsy, which was pioneered by Parasense from Moscow. Here's comments from an old psy trance forum (https://www.psynews.org/forums/topic...dark-psy-born/):
- "X-Dream - Radio started the psy scene I'm told. If you have to point to a break between Goa and Psy that would be it."
- "X-Dream where the first ones I considered to be making psychedelic trance that is dark, both in the music and production/sound design department."
- "Darkpsy as we know it started by Parasense. Of course Parasense were influnced by older artists and X-Dream was one of them."
- "x-dream - Radio is the oldest release I would call Darkpsy (1998)."
Actually on the album "Radio" by X-Dream, there's only one track named "Telegram" that I think could qualify as what later became known as darkpsy:
