It's funny because when I hear Greek being spoken, it almost sounds like an incomprehensible Spanish to me. There is also, unsurprisingly, something similar between the sound of Greek and the sound of far southern Italians speaking Italian (obviously some of their accent is influenced by the Greek that was formerly spoken there).

But when speaking English, Greeks have an accent I would describe as distinctly "Eastern European", not that dissimilar from a stereotypical Russian accent.

Except for a word here and there, even when they speak slowly, I can't understand it at all. While it shouldn't given the connection between my people and Greeks, and especially that language, it feels very foreign to me.

I think, having heard both Sicilian at family reunions growing up and Greek at the Greek festival in my town, the two sound similar in the actual sounds of the languages (with the former having been influenced by the latter), but obviously being in two different language families the words are not the same.

Never been to a Greek festival. Only Italian ones in New Jersey and Manhattan, Sicilian ones in Brooklyn. My exposure has been limited to friends' parents, movies, and diners.

But I still stand by what I said. Greek itself sounds like Spanish phonetically, and Greeks speaking English sound stereotypically Eastern European.

Greek man speaking English.. sounds like your stereotypical Soviet accent from the 1950s.

Modern Greek language is not same as ancient Greek so it makes sense that Sicilians can't understand modern Greek.

Greek sounds cartoon like to me. It also sounds like a mixture of gibberish,Portuguese and Chinese

It's not as if Sicilians can understand ancient Greek either you moron. Greek sounds infinitely better to Albanian which sounds incredibly similar to Chechen, Armenian and other Caucasus languages. Albanian is very unpleasant language to hear.

Albanian sounds like Armenian but it's not unpleasant at all. It also has an Eastern European sound.

I think Albanian, Greek, and Slavic languages all sound generically "Eastern European".
