yes, in some cases of folk devotion a whole new cult of mary can appear, which is basically a reversion to paganism. compare with worship of st. vitus in medieval temple-town arkona by slavic rani. that cult was, too, result of insufficient christianization of rani, who reverted back to paganism, and remaking church in arkona (probably church of st. vitus) to a pagan cult site of their new deity, sventovit (s. vitus).
