Default What is the origin of this Italian surname?

    Papasodero

It's from Calabria. I know Papa- in Greek means "priest", so what's "-sodero"? Is it a corruption of the Greek surname Sotiris?

(translated from an Italian surname app)

Sodero is a typical Apulian surname (from the Lecce area in particular) and is derived from the Greek "Soter", meaning savior.

I was close. Sotirios is Greek for salvation.

So with "Papa" attached, it would probably mean descent from a priest named Sotiris.

Isn't it originally Papasotiriou? And was Latinized.

From what I have found through family stories, anecdotes and parallel history, Papasodero is the 'Italianized' Greek surname Papasotiriou. After Greek independence in the mid 19th Century the country was in chaos and many Greeks left for southern Italy/Sicily where they had family and connections. My great-grandfather was among them. He married an Italian woman but I do not know when the Italianization of the surname happened. There are several Greek Orthodox churches in Calabria and a couple of monasteries. A dialect of Greek, Grecanico, is spoken in a few areas, mostly southern Calabria.
