It is the other way round. Arvanites were 'Albanized' Greeks in language only. They spoke both Greek and Arvanite (which is a mix of Greek and Albanian and Turkish). Arvanitika was born purely out of necessity when the Ottomans brought new Turk-Albanian rulers into the region. They have never considered themselves Albanians, at any point of history. They considered their ancestors Greek, their traditions were Greek, their names were Greek. They donated their properties for the "Greek cause" and were massacred by the very Albanians that now claim them as their own. Greeks have a long history in Abania, but noone had ever heard of Albanians before the 11th century. Their language indicate they were living isolated in some mountainous area (their vocabulary contains very few words related to sea)
