The "castle situation" in France is pretty sad. While we originally had the highest density of them, they went through the war of a Hundred Years, the wars of religion and especially the Revolution.
There are only so much of any dignity left. Hundreds of places essential for our history are now ruins.

I've tried to kept it within the range of Medieval fortifications (except for Sisteron). "Castle" has a much wider sense in French than in English.

I think this is most beautiful castle in Croatia - castle Trakostan. Trakošćan [trakɔʃtɕan] (also pronounced Trakostyan) is a castle located in northern Croatia (in the Varaždin County) that dates back to the 13th century.

Maruoka Castle is probably my absolute favorite castle. It was built in 1576 and it has an instantly recognizable tenshu (keep).

Legend says that when an enemy approaches, a thick mist appears and hides the castle, giving it the name 'Mist Castle'.
