    Yes it's really weird.

Aosta Valley isn't French but Corsica is.

Aosta Valley wasn't part of the deal for France to back Piedmont's wars of expansion. Nice/Savoy were. Unfortunately.

Italy was never going to unify organically like Germany did. It had to be done with weapons.

Ethnically speaking, Aosta Valley and Savoy is Arpitan whilst Nice is Provencal/Occitan. They do belong in France, more so than Corsica, Catalonia or Basque country.

Anyways, more posts about the topic would be great.

I'm not sure. I would guess Minho or Douro Litoral but differences here aren't huge.

I disagree with you. To me all of the eastern regions are darker than the western regions with the exception of Agrigento. I generally find coastal Sicilians to be lighter and inland to be darker. I would have said, from lightest to darkest:

    1) Palermo -- the lightest region.
    2) Trapani -- a lot of dark types, but the second lightest region.
    3) Ragusa -- seems to be lighter than the rest of the east, but with many darker types too. Generally Greek looking.
    4) Caltanissetta -- Nordic influences still present but they fade around here.
    5) Syracuse, Messina, and Catania are all about the same -- phenotypes close to Cretan and Aegean Greeks.
    6) Enna -- homogenously dark overall, but not as exotic as Agrigento in features.
    9) Agrigento -- practically an extension of the Levant. A lot of Armenoid, East Med, even Berberid influences are evident.

More of a South-North divide or an East-West?

Coastal vs inland more than anything. But i still can't identify clear patterns, it's extremely difficult to guess where people are from. Accent is pretty much the only thing that can be used to identify origin.

Pretty much like here in Sweden. Or Scandinavia in general.

    No dispute here.

They're more mixed than the rest of the East, but not in a Northern-orientation, but a Southern one.

The Northern part of the province, yes. San Cataldo, etc. is like an extension of Palermo.
However, most of the population is coastal - like Gela, largest town in the province. They are quite swarthy there. An extension, more-or-less of Agrigento.
I chose to call them darker based on Southern Caltanissetta, you said lighter because of Northern Caltanissetta. Either are valid.
