Titus Livius lived around 64 or 59 BC – AD 12 or 17) and by that time the Macedonian elite was already Hellenized but the ordinary people certainly not!

If you take a look of the post I quoted from Quora you will see why many historians have doubts of the elite being Greek originally.

Many historians think that the hellenizaton process started with Alexander I the Phillhellen who came up with the idea of Argead origin of his ancestors in order to claim Greek origin and to participate in the Olimpic games.

Then if you think about it, why was he called a Phillhellen?

A Phillhellen is someone who is a friend and admirer of Greeks.
There isn't much logic of giving the name Phillhellen to someone who is a Greek himself.

Then you have Demostenes, calling Philip the Second and the Macedonians Barbarian...

Not very Greek gesture to someone of his own race isn't it?

That theory is obsolete until some other language is attested. Its hard to imagine alexander inventing a new language just because he liked Greeks.

The question is what is the official language they use. Anyway, thanks for proving my point that the Slavophone Greeks are Greeks because they feel so, irrespectively of their language.

For sure he isn't a Macedonian, and he could easily be a Bulgar. Those ethnic groups shared many traits, and in the end of the day this is a painting, not a real photograph.

There's no pretending to be Macedonian here mate. It's what my grandparents called themselves, and the land they were born. They were told by their mothers and fathers that they are Macedonians. This is how it works.

That happened only during the last half of the 19th century and until the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, we have been Macedonians a few thousand years now...

Now tell me, are your ancestors Albanians, Turks, Macedonians or Gypsies? Because they sure weren't 'Greek'.

I am Greek with minor Bulgarian ancestry, and it is written in my info box several years now.
