Most sides of my family back the the middle ages and my y line back to when the Norman nobility of Scotland and Northern England. My y line on my tree isn't finished because I am lazy but it probably goes back to 1100-1200 A.D. In Britain on paper.

Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.

Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

So far I have been able to trace my Scottish ancestry (where my surname is from) back to around the 1730's with very high certainty with possible links back to around early 1200's (still trying to find the right documents and connections). I have been able to trace my Irish ancestry back to the early 1700's as well but some of the lines are unknown. My English ancestry I have been able to trace back anywhere between 1590 and the late 1700's depending on which line you follow.

On my dads side it's mostly Scottish except in America, one of female ancestors was an O'Neill from Canada, one was from a Gallowglass family (don't wanna say the name) and one lone German line from Rhineland.
My moms dad is mostly English, Welsh, Cornish, Swiss and Alastian, her mom is mostly Norman/Irish/English Dutch. Most the stuff in me is all Norse/Germanic/Celtic. My Swiss ancestors came from Basal canton, I think that's probably the most exotic western Euro I have in me. I would say admixture I am probably mostly Norse-Gael and English most my German is from the Saxon regions.

There’s only a couple common gallowglas names, Sweeney is on of them if my memory is correct

How many of you work with actual paper-trail, as opposed to computer-generated hints and copy-pasted trees?
    Spoiler!

I use a mixture of both. I started my tree off with the knowledge I knew about my own family. I then spoke to relatives who knew a bit more than I did. Once I had done that then I went online for records, and have used a mixture of records, hints, and other peoples trees to expand upon mine. You definitely have to be careful when copying information from other peoples trees though, especially on sites like Ancestry, etc. Sometimes you will come across 4 or 5 trees that all have the same information and then when you look into it a bit more you find out that they are all wrong and then you have to go through and correct all the errors in your own.

I still have some errors in mine, but I have fixed a lot of incorrect information. The hints and other peoples trees are still a good resource to use but you should always back up as much as you can with copies of original records, etc. It's a constant work in progress but sometimes fun and interesting.

That's very sensible. I do the same for the trees I manage on Ancestry and Geni for friends and people of interest, but I'm pedantic to a fault when it comes to my own family tree, which is maintained completely offline. Every line of information is verified with a scanned source. Ultimately I hope to turn my research into a kind of album focusing on my ancestors and their immediate families. I've started working on it, but I find little time between maintaining a relationship, social life, work and studies:

    Spoiler!
