Genetically:East vs West Europe
Phenotype:North vs South Europe
Politics:East vs West Europe
They are all vastly different and that is great.

Genetically the greatest differences are between North and South and then a lesser divide between West and East. This can be seen in any genetic plot. This has been found to be the case in all genetic studies.
Quoting Razib Khan here.
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/gn.../#.XBSTP-gzbIUThis confirms previous findings that the largest component of variation in Europe is north-south (at least evaluating to the west of a particular geographical cutoff), with a secondary east-west dimension.

Taking this as reference, the distance from Estonians to Sicilians is less than the distance from Basques to some Russian groups or Finns.
Geographically there also a bigger distance west-east than north-south.

Russia and Ireland are both at the extremes of Europe but Ireland is closer to East Germany genetically than before any Southern European country. That is before North Spanish areas which are in Western Europe. This is Ancestry's newest genetic plot. You can see Spain and Italy form their own clusters here.
Here's another plot that illustrates that the biggest divide is north to south. This is the view of geneticists by the way but it is obvious to any novice interested in genetics as well.
