These were in circulation for 20 years. From 1992 until this year.

In 2013 they decided to put Mandela's face on all of them. Real banana republic money.

I like the third series of bank notes the most; those were used between 1961 – 1990:

    5 DM:

Front: "Young Venetian woman" a painting from Albrecht Dürer. Back: oak leaves and acorns that symbolize the German nature

    10 DM:

Front: "Portrait of a young men" (unknown artist) Back: sailing ship "Gorch Fock"

    20 DM:

Front: The patrician Elsbeth Tucher from Nuremberg Back: A violin and clarinet symbolize the German Music

    50 DM:

Front: "Portrait of a men" from Hans Urmiller and Barthel Berham Back: The Holstentor symbolizes the German civic pride ("Bürgerstolz")

    100 DM:

Front: The Cosmograph Sebastian Münster Back: The Eagle symbolizes the German national consciousness.

    500 DM:

Front: "Portrait of a beardless men" from Hans Maler zu Schwaz Back: Burg Eltz symbolizes the German knightliness.

    1000 DM:

Front: "Portrait of a men" from Lucas Cranach the elder Back: The Limburg Cathedral symbolizes Romanesque art of construction in Germany

Oh I remember these! The 5DM was always my favourite because of the oak leaves and I like green.

And also the 1DM, because of the oak leaves too!

2 lev's. Value is 1 euro. The man is Paisius of Hilendar. Because no drawings came to our days, noone knows how he looked like and the painter decided to draw himself on the banknote. Hmmm...

20 lev's. Stefan Stambolov. Probably, the biggest statesman of Bulgaria. The Western journalists gave him the nickname "The Bulgarian Bismark", he was highly respected in the British Empire and France.

    20 DM:

Front: Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, poet and author. Back: a feather and a Beech

    50 DM:

Front: Balthasar Neumann, architect. Back: Partial views of Neumanns buildings

    100 DM:

Front: , musician and composer. Back: A concert grand

    200 DM :

Front: Paul Ehrlich, physician and scientist Back: A microscope
