I said that they qualify as ethnic English provided that their (discernible) ancestry is entirely British Isles. Considering the vast number of Black and Mulatto players, as well as some White players of other origins (e.g. Phil Jagielka is of Polish descent, Carl Jenkinson is half-Finnish), this would seem to be a rather niggling point.

I just realized most of the current crop of ENglish players in the PL play for teams from the lower half of the table

Many yes. But a good few are Germanic, and at the other end of the spectrum a couple look Medish too.
