It was mildly surprising because I really didn't think of my surname as being common anywhere, but it's always nice to learn something new..

Minnesota, Washington and California.
California is a surprise. Is this part of the migration within the US after ww2? I guess Swedes from the Mid-West went to California.

A lot of people went out to California after WWII. I remember when I was a child, California was still the land at the end of the rainbow. Not Euro-Americans are abandoning the state.

Not hard to estimate where the majority of them migrated to after WWII![]()

My name's South African, so I assume they have no data for South Africa and that the only data they have is me and my immediate family in the UK. As far as it's concerned my family are the only people in the world with that surname![]()

Quite surprising that there are so many left in the Old Country, you wouldn't think so from the Nineteenth Century records, such as they are, and the general unfamiliarity of the name;
frequency per million
ROI 48.34
UK 7.16
USA 3.91
Can 3.44
NZ 1.76
Norway 0.28
Noorway - WTF?!? That's quite high an FPM too! What on Earth are we doing there?!? In Hordaland...
None in Australia, oddly enough.
All over the USA, except the northwest, contigous areas of distribution in Dixie and New England. There's a Ridge named after us in the Ozarks!Might have a look one day!
Other New Worlders in Alberta, most in Quebec. Vaudreuil-Soulange, la Riviere du Nord, le Bas-Richelieu, Rousillon and the suburbs of Montreal.
More in Newcastle Upon Tyne than in Manchester, grumble...

My name's solidly English, but most Americans with it are black
Another site for British and American names is this: http://www.ancestry.com/facts/smith-...istory-uk.ashx
Smith isn't my name, btw. Just enter your name at the top and you'll find the county by county distribution of your name in 1890 (minimizing the effects of internal migration).

Norway has a population of 4.8 million so 4.8 x .28 = approximate 1 person. Probably from Eire or the UK working in the oil industry.
