My mom has 3.07 genetic distance (is that what those numbers represent, genetic distance?) to the German reference population. I think that's kinda interesting that this calculator was able to pick up her German ancestry. Is 3.07 in Oracle close enough to be a good fit for a particular population?

Because my mom is closer to that German reference population than her mom, is that a possible sign that the German influence is coming from her father's side and that if he were to test with this calculator he would probably end up even closer to the Germans than my mom?

On paper I'm about 1/2 British/Irish (Mostly English), 1/8 Danish, 1/8 Northern and Eastern German (including Pomerania), 1/4 French, Alsatian-German and other parts of Germany. FTDNA picks up some southern European including Spain, Romania and Italy. I've also got some Ashkenazi and Finnish according to 23andMe. So as far as what this means is beyond me. I have good matches with people from Norway, Poland and Russia on 23andMe as well. Is there something deeper in my ancestry or just noise?

Logically speaking that is most likely, although there is a fair bit of variation within families. That would suggest her father is closer (or at least as close) to the German reference population than she is. Certainly 3.07 is a pretty good match, given that the average is the average, rather than 'typical' So the average is made up of lots of different groups that are slightly different to each other, but each group fits quite closely to the average.

Polako let me know his thoughts last night on the origins of the North_Sea component from this calculator. Here is what he said below when I asked him about it.

''I think the North Sea component is of very diverse origins and includes both Mesolithic and Neolithic admixture from North-Central and Northwest Europe. Various late Indo-European groups were probably responsible for its expansion across Europe, including Germanics.''

I then asked him if an origin in the areas of Frisia, Northern Germany or Denmark seem likely and he said.

''Yes, somewhere in that general area. It'll be interesting to see how the German and Danish Single Grave samples from The Rise project turn out in terms of genome-wide affinities. I expect them to be North Sea-like, or at least carrying a major component that contributed to the modern North Sea cluster.''
