Displaced Roma Arrive from Helsinki


The group of Roma arrived by ferry over the weekend after reportedly striking a deal with Helsinki officials.

A group of approximately 45-50 ethnic Roma travelers whom Helsinki authorities controversially paid to return to their native Romania and Bulgaria arrived in Tallinn on November 28.

Last week the Roma had received 300 euros each and a ferry ticket to Tallinn in exchange for their agreement to leave Finland, rus.err.ee reported.

Helsinki authorities took the unusual step after a fire in the group's makeshift camp led to its electricity supply being cut off. Its residents were placed in an emergency shelter after plummeting temperatures in the Finnish capital made the camp uninhabitable.

Jarmo Räihä of the city's Social Services Department said the group's departure was voluntary, part of an agreement reached with the Roma. The money is meant to cover the cost of fuel on their journey home. Most of the group were traveling in their own cars, Räihä told Helsingin Sanomat.

The Finnish-based rights organization Vapaa Liikkuvuus (Free Movement) has criticized the city's move, calling it a forced departure and saying that authorities should have instead provided housing for the Roma.

A Hindu group in the US also condemned the repatriation.

This summer France drew a hailstorm of international criticism when authorities there launched a widespread crackdown on Roma camps and began deporting hundreds of their residents.

There is no information as to whether the group has continued to move south. By law, the EU citizens have the right to stay in Estonia for 90 days before registering their residence in the country.

Jarmo Räihä should go fuck himself, if he's responsible for sending the Gypsies to Tallinn. Like we wouldn't have enough problems with Russians and the massive amount of crime they cause.

It is indeed, very probable that a bunch of Gypsies is going to drive straight from Tallinn to Romania.
