Internet penetration in Kosovo is 77%, what else could it have been you sick bastards?
In 2013, a study conducted by STIKK about internet penetration and usage in Kosovo resulted in some interesting insights. The following data is based on the facts and figures provided in the study.
In Kosovo, there are about 1.1 million internet users, (77% of the population – eligibly distributed). It is the highest rate in the region and is comparable to major developed countries like Germany, Switzerland, UK, etc.
More internet users in rural areas
In Kosovo, there are more internet users in rural areas (77.7%) than in urban areas (75%). This is an interesting statistic because urban areas are supposed to have a higher internet user rate compared to rural areas, mainly due to the more convenient access to internet they provide.
One of the key reasons rural areas have so many internet users in Kosovo is theneed to communicate with relatives living abroad, since the majority of Kosovar Diaspora are from rural areas.
The following statistics serve to support the above argument:
` 80% of internet users use internet to communicate with relatives abroad and friends
` 65% of internet users use Skype.
Compared to traditional phone communication, Internet has made communication a lot cheaper and more convenient. Apart from voice communication, additional benefits are provided such as sharing of images, video, etc., hence the preferability of internet over phone communication.
Concerning internet services, preferred services by the employed are email, LinkedIn, news sites, research & studying sites, etc. On the other hand, services preferred by the unemployed are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, online movies & music, etc.
