It is fringe in most modern scholarship (it wasn't always though). It's relatively common in online discourse and some far-right revisionism, as can be seen here at Apricity fairly frequently.

Yeah, it probably gets a lot of time online. But the Internet attracts an inordinate number of kooks. I don't think it's representative of mainstream society, academic or not. For example, I don't think ancient Jews were white; they weren't black as Afrocentrists (the reverse of what we're talking about) claim, but in all likelihood they weren't white either.

What I was referring to by "theft" is revision of historical allegiances and details concerning characters of the past. If anything, it is in Macedonia where the most "revision" takes place, this is all I say.

Uriel Weinreich in College Yiddish makes snarky comments like (and I paraphrase because I don't have the book with me) , 'Comparing Modern High German and Yiddish is like comparing a Bonobo or Chimpanzee to Homo Sapiens.' and then there was a part where he takes Yiddish words that are exactly the same as the Modern German and traces them to Middle German conveying the impression (instead of, say, merely tracing both the Yiddish and the Modern German word back to the same Middle German root) that they are ultimately different words. Then there is the word 'schmuck' where someone tried to trace it to Polish Smog "Dragon" when I think that the German der Schmuck "Jewel, adornment" is clearly the origin as there is no especial reason to think that it isn't. One said that it was a corruption of Stechl or "Small stick" that came about due to child rhyming games, when I think that even then it could be merely Schmueckel as in Schmuecklein, the word Schmuck + typical German diminutive -lein as -l is just a dialectical variation of -lein as evidenced by Bavarian de Tischle cf. Standard German Das Tischlein "small table." similar to Yiddish Shtetl cf. Standard German Staedtlein "small city."

Digressing from the paragraph above, Ghilad Zuckermann has written an interesting thesis on Modern Hebrew which he calls "Israeli" being a relexified Yiddish. I wish I could read his dissertation, but alas it is in Hebrew.
