Because some of Freud's theories have been simplified and permeated into 'general knowledge and culture' (such as the concept of subconscious, the Oedipus Complex, etc.), many of them have been and still are misunderstood by those who don't actually study Psychoanalysis (or take the time to have a deep understanding on the matter).

To have a firm grasp of his (and Lacan's, etc) theories takes years, actually. What you read a magazine about Freudian theories is oversimplified; even what you can see on a Pychology course at uni.

On the other hand, theories can't be proved or disproved. And his theories on Sexuality and the System of the Subconscious are not outdated. Additions have been made to the theory, of course. But nothing has been discarded yet.
