Saint Lucia
(I thought I'd make a thread about the native island
of my Saint Lucian-English son's father; Saint Lucia.)
Saint Lucia is a British Commonwealth island nation
also known as 'The Paradise Island'.
Saint Lucia has both French and British cultural influences,
and is a popular tourist desination with the wealthy middle-classes
who like to travel on luxurious cruiseliner ships to explore the island,
and also where wealthy people and retired doctors from the UK
buy luxurious villas as their second-homes.
St. Lucia shares the same Queen Elizabeth II
and head of state as the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, etc.
Each island in the Caribbean/West Indies has their own culture,
(just like each nation in Europe has their own cultures. )
About 70% of the population in Saint Lucia is Roman Catholic,
a legacy of French colonisation of the island.
The remaining 30% belongs to other Christian denominations,
including the Seventh-day Adventist Church (7%), Pentecostals (6%),
Anglicans (2%), other Evangelicals (2%)
Cricket, tennis, golf, football and squash
are the most popular sports played on the island.
Saint Lucia is the only country in the world to be named after a female;- Saint Lucy.
Saint Lucia boasts the second highest ratio of Nobel laureates produced
with respect to the total population of any sovereign country in the world.
Two winners have come from Saint Lucia:
Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979,
and the poet Derek Walcott received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.
Saint Lucia (aka 'the paradise island') has coral reefs,
turtles on the beaches, crystal-clear aquamarine, blue, and turquoise seas,
clean and soft white sand beaches, waterfalls, mountains, yachts,
hummingbirds that drink from the exotic flowers, private beaches, palm trees,
all kinds of delicious fruits, fishes, and tropical vegetables, rainforests,
calypso music, villas, 5 star hotels, cottages, 5 star boutique resorts,
luxury spas, scuba-diving,
tourist helicopter rides giving views over the island and of the pitons,
jacuzzis, jet-sking, speedboats, a range of restaurants, shopping malls
.... it's a very popular place for romantic honeymoons.
