Who were the richest men in the world? A question which is difficult to answer, both for the fragmentary information, not direct that we have from antiquity, and because times change, social and economic conditions evolve and it is difficult to make a comparison between a billionaire today and one of 10 centuries does. But Time with the help of historians and economists have ranked the 10 richest men of all time. Here they are.
10-Genghis Khan. Lived between 1162 and 1227, Genghis Khan was the founder of the Mongol empire, which stretched from Asia to Europe. Quantifying his possessions is impossible, but according to historians the territories that possessed make him the tenth richest person ever.
9-Bill Gates. In ninth place is the only 'moneybags' living, i.e. the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates. The American billionaire has an estimated fortune of 79.4 billion euro and is the richest among men now alive.
8-Alan Rufus lived between 1040 and 1093, Alan the Red was a Breton French noble who fought for the king of England William the Conqueror. At his death possessed 'only' 11 thousand pounds, or 7 percent of the entire British GDP. Today would be 183.6 billion euro.
7-John D.Rockefeller. We could not miss in this ranking Rockefeller, born in 1839 and died in 1937, the founder of Standard Oil, which in 1880 controlled 90 percent of the oil production in the United States with an estimated value to date of 322.8 billion of euro.
6Andrew Carnegie. Of Scottish origin but naturalized American, he lived between 1835 and 1919. Successful businessman, sold his companies to J. P. Morgan banker to 480 billion dollars, which today would be 352.2 billion euro.
5-Joseph Stalin. Yes, one of the myths of the Communists of the whole world is the fifth richest man of all time. The Soviet dictator, in fact, commanded the entire USSR economy and, de facto, possessed the whole country. I.e. controlled a treasure of 7.1 billion current euro.
4-Akbar the Great. At the foot of the podium is the Great Mogul, who lived between 1542 and 1605, and who controlled the Moghul Empire, responsible for about a quarter of global economic output.
3-Emperor Shenzong of Song. Lived between 1048 and 1085, emperor of the Song Dynasty in China, was one of the most powerful empires of all time, with economic strength estimated at around 25 and 30 percent of the world economy.
2-Augustus. The first Roman emperor, lived between 63 a. C. and 14 d. C., came to have a personal wealth equal to one-fifth of the economy of the empire, that is 4.3 billion EUR and private among his possessions there was also the whole of Egypt.
1- Emperor Mansa Musa of Mali, who lived between 1280 and 1337, his country was at the time the largest producer of gold in the world. Precisely for this reason has always been considered the richest man of all time in the world.

So that king of Mali was "richest of all times" yet his "empire" was pretty much shithole, makes perfect sense.

After retiring in 1901 at the age of 66, Andrew Carnegie wanted to become a philanthropist. In 1902 he founded the Carnegie Institution to fund scientific research. He gave money to towns and cities to build public libraries.

They seem to have forgotten, Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad state in India who had a networth of around 236 billion $ if adjusted by inflation. He was the richest man in the world, during the 30s-40s period.
