What does IBS similarity even mean

IBS stands for Identical By State, meaning the DNA matches either because it comes from a common ancestor (Identical By Descent - IBD) or by coincidence. When two individuals share numerous individual results without being related, those results are IBS. Only when enough consecutive results are identical do we identify the shared segment as likely being IBD.

IBD = Common ancestry (extending back a few centuries, for most populations)
