It depends on the scenario. If N. Korea started using atomic weapons it would be simply suicidal. Likewise, if they started a conventional invasion of the South, they would get smashed. But if the Americans (obviously with S. Korean support) started a conventional invasion of the North it's possible that the US would suffer enough losses to turn the public opinion home and force a compromise peace.
