Greek earthquake: Powerful tremor shakes Athens
19th July 2019
The crucifix was shaken from the bell tower of the Church of the Pantanassa
A strong earthquake has shaken the Greek capital of Athens, knocking out phone networks and power in parts of the city.
The earthquake was registered at 5.1 magnitude with an epicentre about 22km (14 miles) north-west of Athens.
Athenians ran out into the streets and evacuated tall buildings as the tremor shook the capital for some 15 seconds.
There were no reports of serious injuries but several aftershocks have been felt.
The earthquake was particularly felt in the centre of Athens. There were reports that the fire service rescued over a dozen people trapped in elevators, following the power outage.
Residents posted footage on social media of the impact of the quake.
Seismologists say the earthquake was around 13km (8m) from the surface, and its proximity was the reason why it was felt strongly.

Let's not forget that they are just about the worst place to be in in all of Europe:
Are they prepared for when the Big One comes calling ? Building code wise ? Emergency service wise ?
Wake up and smell the coffee.

Not so much. According to Vasilis Lekidis from the Institute of engineering seismology & earthquake engineering, about 70% of Thessaloniki's buildings are are built with old regulations and do not have seismic adequacy.

Besides, it's not only the earthquakes. Now with climate change, the climate of Greece is slowly becoming tropical and we already see it's effects and destructive power.

Good luck, Greece. Because if that is what's coming to you, you guys are truly, completely and epically fucked. We have our earthquake problems up in Groningen with some property damage but that's more because of gas extraction which can be stopped (and should be stopped).

Actually, even the old regulations took precautions about earthquakes, and deaths from earthquakes are far less than death from fires for several years now, if not decades. The last earthquake in Thessaloniki had one mass casualty incident, which was caused by a wiseguy who sawed off the foundation of a building in order to make space for something silly. That was many decades ago.
