In some ways, this was a good thing, because it ensured that men who couldn't support a family wouldn't be able to start one, thus saving children from being born into poverty.

People assume it's easier to get a partner with arranged marriage but parents/ family had stricter criteria and status/wealth was important. Now at least they can fall for your personality or something and have no one else to impress

Depends on the cultural norms of the country you're in. In England it's expected that you offer to pay for the girl and do so unless she declines, in which case you split the bill. I haven't tried dating in Sweden yet (and probably won't for a while) but I'm given to understand that the culture here dictates that women are almost insulted if you try and pay for them - generally they seem more concerned with preserving their own personal autonomy and being seen as completely self-reliant. Personally I don't think there's a "one size fits all" rule here, it's just about what both parties are comfortable with.

Personally I'd always be okay with paying for the girl if I liked her, but have no issue with splitting the costs either (I have a few friends back home that really don't like the idea of letting a girl pay her own half, and that baffles me).
