Bulgarians by origin. Specifically eastern Bulgarians.

There is smell of political agendas in this Y-dna thread. Gagauzes are under Russian sphere of influence, they generally mate with Transdniestrians and when jobless Gagauzes immigrate, it's towards Moscow. Not Berlin, Paris or Washington. Not Istanbul either.

Yes, it is, but there is a lot of speculation about their origin and ethnogenesis. This is the study from Moldova, of the Gagauzes, who in the early 19th century, together with other Bulgarians, after the subsequent Russo-Turkish War of 1829, migrated to the Russian Empire / today Moldova, Bessarabia region /

Up to 20-30 years ago, the Gagauzians as well as the Bulgarians in Moldova lived compact and closed in their villages. There is no practice mixing with Ukrainians, Moldovans or Russians for the 200 years since they moved there. Nowadays, given the urbanization and disintegration of the USSR, these mixing processes are beginning to be observed through economic migration.

In my opinion Gagauzes and Turks of Northeastern Bulgaria are direct descendants of the Bulgars. Or at least they have some genetic connection with them, unlike modern Slavic Bulgarians.
