I agree about the fact that applied mathematics are a whole thing different. In applied mathematics you try to model real situations, heavy use of analysis and statistics, pure mathematics is an "another world", litterally.

There were people even in the past, like Hardy (a brilliant mathematician nonetheless) that despised applied mathematics and considered pure mathematics as the only true one.

Also scientists and engineers are much less rigorous than mathematicians when they use mathematics, notations, hypothesis, lot of things are simplified. Except in theoretical physics but it's a very specific field.

I even didn't talked about empirical laws that are countless in physics, especially in fields where it's very tricky finding equations that describe perfectly the phenomenons involved, like in acoustics. Empirical laws aren't accepted in mathematics, because the relation can work for 1,320,525 numbers, but who knows that the next wouldn't fail to verify it ?
