Edward Michael Grylls (better known as Bear Grylls,) is a British former SAS (Special Air Service/paratrooper/UK Special Forces/elite soldier/intelligence gatherer,) serviceman, survival instructor, and honorary lieutenant-colonel, and, outside his military career, an adventurer, writer, television presenter and businessman.
Grylls was born in London, England in 1974. From a family with a strong cricketing background, his grandfather Neville Ford and great-grandfather William Augustus Ford, were both first-class cricketers.
From an early age, he learned to climb and sail with his father, who was a member of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron. As a teenager, he learned to skydive and earned a second dan black belt in Shotokan karate.
Grylls was educated at Eaton House, Ludgrove School and the prestigious Eton College, where he helped start its first mountaineering club.
He studied Spanish and German at the University of West of England and at the leading Birkbeck, University of London, where he graduated with a 2:2 bachelor's degree, obtained part-time, in Hispanic studies in 2002.
He speaks English, French, and Spanish.
He is widely known for his television series Man vs. Wild (2006–2011), originally titled Born Survivor: Bear Grylls for the United Kingdom release.
He's allowed to show his face since he's no longer in the Special Air Service.
