We should create LOR / Middle Earth sub-forum here
To discuss all kinds of details of Tolkien's writings/world. I mean that is part of European culture.

Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live.
Even if this were hard--that is how it is ! Assuredly, however, by far the harder fate is that which strikes the man who thinks he can overcome Nature, but in the last analysis only mocks her. Distress, misfortune, and diseases are her answer.

Several thoughts about this immortal work with the current level of perception.
From the "Lord of the Rings" we know that Sauron is a villain and in general the totalitarian dictator. But you can look at the other side. And then the completely stunning picture will open!
There was such a wizard - Gandalf. According to the book - the mighty spirit in human body. He wandered through the Middle-Earth and somehow diplomatically solved all sorts of conflicts between the local peoples. At the end of story, he started a chain of events associated with the Ring and a grand ending battle between "good" and "evil". And Gandalf was an enemy of Sauron, who tried to destroy him.
Consider the facts:
* Gandalf in the work is present. And Sauron - no. Absolutely not. He does not appear anywhere from his face or from someone else's. There are only talks about Sauron. Everyone is here - humans, elves, dwarves, hobbits, orcs, enths, blacks - yes, everybody is present. And Sauron is not. Just no - and that's it.
* By the book, Gandalf was Mayar (this is something like titans), like Sauron. Both were wise diplomats. Both actively participated in the life of the peoples of the Middle-earth. Both managed huge communities (and both - in diplomatic way). Only Sauron was also an excellent engineer-inventor, and for Gandalf, this was not observed. But Saruman did some engineering. Although, Gandalf wasn't really need of engineering in the book, only social one.
* Gandalf and Sauron both were looking for a ring. Gandalf found it. And immediately began the mighty activity on the restructuring of the Middle-earth political map.
* The Ring. In general, pure PR and deception. This ring in the book does not work at all. The only thing that it is suitable is like a means of communication with Sauron and Nazguls (they see Frodo when he puts on a ring). That's all. It does nothing more. And about its "omnipotence" we know only from Gandalf, no more sources.
* Tom Bombadil. He isn't in the films, but in the book he is. He is also a MAYAR, as well as Gandalf and Sauron. But he lives with his own (I hope) wife in the forest and doesn't give a f*ck what is happening there on the "continent". At all. Moreover, when Frodo and his bros get to visit him, Tom puts the Ring - and nothing happens. At all. ZERO. Twisting in his hands, he easily gives the ring back to Frodo. Then the hobbits go further, and Tom stays in the forest.
* Orcs in Moria. The staff of the underground industrial complex, which tried to drive out of the industrial premises of some wild ragamuffins.
* Balrog in Moria. Just a watchman. So that any gopniks do not plunder the underground industrial complex. Therefore, Gandalf survived in the "fight" with him. They fell down, that he "are you ok?" "Yeah. Let's wait for these suckers go away rather far off."
* Orcs - educated industrial workers on different underground and terrestrial plants and factories (probably Tolkien despised working class).
* Elves - wild, illiterate gopniks living on trees.
* Humans are wild herdsmen.
* Dwarves - wild, but rather skillful monkeys, whom the orcs taught the basics of industry and mining.
* Hobbits - some omega-males, it is not clear why they needed at all.
* Mordor - a huge industrial cluster hidden from wild monkeys and gopniks behind the powerful reinforced concrete fortifications ("mountains").
* Frodo throws the ring in lava, the volcano explodes, "Sauron is defeated" Hooray! Everybody got married and sailed to Valinor.
What result do we have? Political map of Middle-earth has changed. That's all. Nothing more has changed. Everyone remained in their places, only the authorities changed.
Gandalf sailed to Valinor, no one saw Sauron, the rest went home. Orcs, by the way, too.
Hence the simple conclusion: Gandalf was Sauron! He was the wisest and most cunning of Mayars, a great strategist and a diplomat - and this is what we see in the face of Gandalf. Picture a "good grandpa" was too easy for him. However, why do we think Sauron was evil, cannibal and similar to Stalin at all? Just because the elves said so. But who are the elves? Insolent, uppity killers who cut each other (the story of Feanor, as an example).
The only "testimony" of Sauron's cruelty is a muddy story of Gollum, as he was tortured in Mordor, when they were finding out who stole the ring. It is possible that Gollum was the KEEPER of the ring. So that no one could find it, and the ring didn't fall to humans / elves / dwarves dirty and greedy paws. And then it is immediately clear, for what Gollum was tortured. For the fact that the valuable object is gone.
What is the role of Sauron / Gandalf in the work? Peacemaker. Constantly trying to prevent war and murder. And all the rest? Hurray-forward-war-to the winning-end! How do we know that Sauron ruled Orcs? From nowhere. Neither in the work nor in the film this is not shown at all. Saruman managed orcs - it is shown. And Sauron was "etherealt spirit"? Did you believe?
In "Hobbit" Sauron/Gandalf makes the same - trying to solve the situation peacefully. While the elves cut dwarves, and the dwarves cut elves. And what have "evil Sauron" to do with it? Nothing. It's not his business. Even according to Sauron/Gandalf words, "angry Sauron" was "tyrant", but he wanted to RULE the people of Middle-earth, not destroy them.
And that Sauron, who was "ethereal spirit" and "lord of the rings" and whom no one ever saw, never existed at all. There was a real Sauron/Gandalf - a wizard, diplomat and politician - and there was a fairy tale, with the help of which he tried to somehow intimidate a variety of morons so that they do not kill each other.
