There's only one problem with the Mississippi: earthquakes.
It's true that there haven't been any intense quakes in a very long time, over 200 years. Still, the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812 had estimated moment magnitudes of 7.0-8.6. One of them was powerful enough to cause the formation of a new lake called Reelfoot Lake, which is in NW Tennessee. The epicenters were in NE Arkansas and far SE Missouri, near the Mississippi, and the fault zone still exists. This part of the U.S. was sparsely populated at the time, so there weren't many deaths or injuries reported.

The Mississippi traverses through more extreme climates, from very humid continental to very humid subtropical. More severe weather and thunderstorms are common.
The Mississippi has some cool cities, but they also tend to be rougher around the edges than cities elsewhere in the US. I'm thinking of St. Louis, a major city on the river. Minneapolis-St. Paul is okay (at the headlands), and New Orleans is awesome and cool but very rough. I'm sure there are charming small towns and smaller cities to live in near the Mississippi in places like Iowa, southern Illinois, parts of Arkansas, etc...
